RURAL CIVIC ADDRESSING

Civic Addressing is a province-wide standardized system of identifying and locating properties by establishing unique access point locations. This system is used to assist emergency responders such as police, fire, and ambulance in finding residences and businesses quickly in the event of an emergency.

The geographic location of the addresses is based on the driveway access to a building, such as a residence or business.

Civic addressing is used in conjunction with the traditional methods such as landmarks or legal land description to efficiently locate an emergency using geographic coordinates.

Your civic address will appear on your Assessment Notice and Tax Notice directly underneath the land description.

The RM has been working on the assignment of civic addressing to all occupied properties within the municipality, with addresses assigned based on the location of each property’s driveway onto a roadway.

The addresses will be filed with emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance. Your civic address IS NOT a mailing address. At this time, the information is not being shared with third party services (goggle maps, UPS, Purolator, Canada Post).

Civic Addressing is currently a voluntary program in Saskatchewan, therefore, all occupied properties will be assigned a civic address but are not obligated to install a civic address sign if the owner chooses not to.

Upon implementation of this program, emergency services will have your civic address in their systems. The sign is merely confirmation they have arrived at the correct property. What this means is that even though you may not have a sign quite yet, the Public Safety Agency has your property recorded in their system.

RURAL CIVIC ADDRESS SIGNS

Civic Address Signs

Civic address signs are now available at the RM office.

For those ratepayers that intend to install a civic address sign at their yard, please contact the RM (306-327-4222) to determine if your sign is available at the office.

Please note that the RM will be placing another order shortly for any additional signs that are required.

***Because the Saskatchewan Civic Address Registry is a voluntary program, all occupied properties will be assigned a civic address but are not obligated to install a civic address sign if the owner chooses not to.

Installation of Civic Address Signs

The installation of the signs shall follow the specifications as below:

• To the right-hand side of the approach entering the property;

• At a minimum of 15 feet from the edge of the road, on the back slope, with preference on the property line.

• At a minimum height of 1.2 meters (4 ft.) to a maximum of 1.5 metres (5 ft.) from ground level to the top of the Rural Address Sign.

For property owners along a Highway, the Ministry of Highways specifications are as follows:

• Signs are to be installed on the primary driveway; and

• At the edge of the highway right-of-way (eg. - fence line). It is encouraged that the sign be placed immediately adjacent to the driveway, in a location clearly visible from the highway.

Once you have determined the proper installation location for your sign, the RM encourages you to request a line locate prior to installation of the post (contact Sask 1st Call (1) online “Click Before You Dig” option at http://www.clickbeforeyoudig.com/en/countries/canada/sk/; or (2) phone “Call Before You Dig-SK” at 1-866-828-4888).

The Saskatchewan Civic Address Registry is a voluntary provincial program that enables community authorities to manage address location and information in a geographic database through an online interactive mapping website.

The Civic Address Registry database was compiled using address information provided by communities and addresses that were derived for rural communities where no previously assigned civic addresses existed.

TOWNSHIP & RANGE ROAD SIGNS

  • Range Roads run north and south and Township Roads run east and west.
  • In most cases the Range Roads are 1 mile apart while the Township Roads are 2 miles apart.
  • The numbers on the Range Road/Township Road signs indicate: (1) The Township or Range; (2) The mile within the Township or Range; (3) The Meridian
  • The miles are counted starting from the south & east boundary of the Municipality moving west with Ranges and north with Townships.
  • EXAMPLE:  "TOWNSHIP RD 382” refers to the Township 38 and the 2nd mile from the southern edge of the township.
  • EXAMPLE:  "RANGE RD 2121" refers to the 2ndMeridian, Range 12 and the 1st mile from the eastern edge of the range.

How are Rural Civic Addresses Assigned

  • Properties along a Township or Range Road: Each mile in a section is divided into 40 m lot intervals producing 80 addressable lots.
  • Properties along a Highway and numbered Grid Road: The highway or road is divided into 40 m lot intervals for the full length, starting at the most southern and eastern location in relation to the distance to the provincial boundary.
  • Properties along locally named roads: The road is divided into 40 m lot intervals for the full length of the road, starting at the most southern and eastern location.
  • Even civic numbers are on the west/south side of road.
  • Odd civic numbers are on the east/north side of road.
  • Civic numbers generally increase in a northerly and westerly direction.
  • If there is a single access to multiple properties, a unit number can be included to describe the address.
  • It is recommended that country residential or lakefront properties with no pre-existing civic addresses, follow an urban addressing system model.
